MEDIA: Unique Vegetables and Fruit You Should Try

by | Jul 30, 2018

One of the main reasons why I love being a dietitian is because I get to talk about food. In particular, I love talking about cultural cuisine from around the world, as it is one of my niche areas of practice!

Today I was on CHCH Morning Live discussing exotic vegetables and fruits you can enjoy Here are the vegetables I covered:

Chinese Celery

Chinese celery is much like the conventional variety, except it’s much softer and less stringy than your regular variety. It is a great cooking celery, where you can eat both the leaves and the stems. I fry it in a bit of canola oil, garlic, pepper and salt and it makes an excellent dinner side dish!

Indian Bitter Melon

Thai Basil

Dragon Fruit

Dragon Fruit Salad

1/2 dragon fruit, peeled and cut into a fine dice
2 large strawberries, cut into a fine dice
6 fresh Thai basil leaves, torn
Juice of 1/2 lime
Pinch kosher saltToss all of the ingredients together in a small bowl. Eat as a snack or on top of frozen yogurt.

Lychee

Rambutan

Here are the following stores you can find these vegetables and fruits in Hamilton:Nations Fresh Foods – 2 King St W #445, Hamilton, ON L8P 1A2

B and T Food Centre – 103 Queen St N, Hamilton, ON L8R 2V5

Tan Thanh Supermarket – 115 Park St N, Hamilton, ON L8R 2N2

You can find them at most Asian grocery stores. You can find them at T & T Supermarket in Toronto and the GTA and in Chinatown downtown!
